What does Paul actually mean by “submission”? by Lionel Windsor 03/02/2020

Published on: 19 Feb 2020
Author: Lionel Windsor

Five times in his letters, the Apostle Paul uses the words “submit” or “submission” to describe an activity or attitude of women in relation to men. Why does he choose this particular word group, and what does he actually mean by it? We modern readers often make assumptions about what this word means; are these assumptions correct? In this elective, we explore these questions, seeking clarity and precision in the meaning of these verses.

Please note: This paper was presented as an academic elective at the Priscilla and Aquila Conference. It was a presentation of some initial findings, and was aimed at receive scholarly feedback so that the paper could be clarified and updated, working towards eventual publication. Hence this video does not represent the final, settled opinion of the presenter.

Level: Academic.
